Mile Long Burn

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

Strong City, Kansas

This Fall I worked with the National Park Service at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Strong City, Kansas to produce a companion piece to Broken Kilometer that engaged with another form of erasure and disruptive ecology. This collaborative companion piece, Mile Long Burn, capitalized on the use of fire to maintain native species in our dwindling tallgrass prairies.

Mile Long Burn was enacted in September 2019 after several years of planning and coordination with the National Park Service. The resulting prescribed burn was started as a mile long line along the length of the highway that borders the southern end of the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve.
